These pictures were taken at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum.
The Mariner 2 was the first space probe to conduct a successful planetary encounter. It passed within approximately 35,000 kilometres (22,000 miles) of Venus, and sent back information about the planet's temperature, magnetic and radiation fields.
