Baths of Dona Maria

The "Baths of Lady María de Padilla" are rainwater tanks which are named after the mistress of Pedro the Cruel. Legend has it that Pedro fell in love with María and had her husband killed. María, desperate to stop Pedro's advances, poured boiling oil over her face to disfigure herself. She later became a nun. She is regarded as a symbol of purity in Seville.

The baths used to be open to daylight, but then they extended the palace over the top leaving them in crypt-like gloom.
