After much Google-ing, I finally discovered that this character is from a comic strip called 'Lanfeust of Troy'. It's about a young blacksmith's apprentice, Lanfeust, who lives in the magical world of Troy. After discovering he has unusual powers, he begins a quest of initiation. I'm not a huge comic book fan ('Beano' and 'Viz' are about my limits), but I would give this series a go if I could find an English version.
