Why on Earth we took the picture at this stoopid angle - obviously we were too lazy to walk an extra few steps to the front of the column.
Anyway, this is the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument, designed by Martin Milmore. It was dedicated on September 17th, 1877, when the entire militia force of the State paraded in Boston. (Hopefully they got to see the thing from the front!)
