Archimedes screw

This is the mechanism used by the windmill to pump water from the ground:

The windmill turns the screw, and, as the bottom end of the tube turns, it scoops up a quantity of water. The water slides up in the spiral tube as the shaft is turned, and finally pours out from the top of the screw. Sorta... it's really hard to describe in words, look it up online and there are loads of nice animations if you're curious.
